The period of Thiruvalluvar is said to be between the first century B.C. and 6th century AD according to some scholars while many scholars have the view that Thirukkural was written 2040 years ago from now on.
Though there are great moral literature in different languages of several countries, the great scholars like Albert Switcher, G.U.Pope and others agree that Thirukkural is the greatest moral literature without parallel. There are 1330 kurals equally distributed in 133 chapters. Kural means a couplet and Thirukural transcends the barriers of period, nationality and borders of all nations. This moral literature is accepted invariably by the practitioners of all religions. Around nine great foreign scholars including G.U.Pope were attracted by the contents and subject matter Thirukkural. Hence, they have translated Thirukkural in to their tongue.
As all are born equal, there are no caste distinctions according Thiruvalluvar. In order to maintain harmonious relationship in all surroundings, it is essential that harsh words should not be used under any circumstances, are some of the great teachings of Thirukural.
Appropriate use of the best words in the best order makes a good poem. Hence poetess Avvaiyar states that the accumulated wisdom of past millennia is consolidated into less than two lined verse of Thirukkural just like the waters of seven seas are carved into a split atom.
