ASSOCIATION FOR SOCIAL HEALTH IN INDIA

Introduction

Association for Social Health in India (ASHI) formerly known as Association for Social and Moral Hygiene (ASHM) is a voluntary organization working to promote social health of the people.
ASHM was founded by a social reformist, Josphine Butter in England and dates back to 19th Century.  The Indian unit was started in Calcutta in 1928.  Now it has branches  in  20 states, with head quarters in New Delhi.

Objectives of ASHI

  1. Prevention of exploitation of women and girls.
  2. Securing equal ethical standards for men and women.
  3. Strengthening the institution of family.
  4. Prevention and control of STD and HIV / AIDS.
  5. Mobilizing public support for promotion of the cause of social health.
  6. Holding Workshops, Seminars, and Debates etc…
  7. Publishing materials for the promotion of girls of ASHI.
  8. Seeking public co-operation for the Association’s activities.

VASUKI SEVA NILYAM 

VASUKI SEVA NILAYAM: (A Short – Stay Home for Women)

VSN is a shelter for care and protection and has been functioning from 1982.  It was started with an aim of giving hope to the victimized women and children by providing the following services:

  1. Providing residential care and protection to women and children in distress in the age group of 15 to 35 years who are in moral danger and at high risks such as destitute, deserted, victims of domestic violence, situational crisis, victims of poverty etc for a maximum period of two years.
  2. Providing in - house, vocational  skill – training such as tailoring, embroidery, craft work, homemade industries for their rehabilitation, sending them to other institutions, to undergo short term courses such as Nursing, Physiotherapy, Screen printing etc, to enhance their earning capacity.
  3. Providing job placement services.
  4. Providing literacy programmes to make them functionally literate.
  5. Educational programmes to generate awareness on social health issues.
  6. Offering professional social case work and counseling services to the individual’s family
  7. members to take charge of their problems, building their coping skills and providing opportunities and supports to lead a socially healthy life.
  8.  Legal aid assistance to secure their legal rights.
  9.  Child Care Service to the children of the beneficiaries.
  10.  Programme to promote their emotional health.
  11.  Suitable referral services.
  12. Organizing medical camps.
